Acorn Metals recently completed a project fabricating a fully custom toolbox designed and made to size to suit a custom workbench. Custom metal fabrication allows clients to turn a specific idea into a practical, purpose-built product. From the initial concept through to design and fabrication, each stage can be tailored to the intended application, dimensions and specifications.
The project incorporated steel fabrication, guillotine cutting, turret punching, press brake forming, spot welding, powder coating and assembly, all working together to produce the finished toolbox.
We managed the full scope of supply, from preparing the individual steel components through to fitting and testing the drawers and applying the final finish.
Sheet Preparation
The first step in the project was preparing the heavy gauge steel required to construct the toolbox. The steel sheets were accurately cut using our Hydraulic Guillotine, producing the individual components to the required dimensions.
The sheets were cut to form the drawer boxes, cabinet sides and benchtop, providing the foundation for the following fabrication stages.
Turret Punching and Forming
With the steel components cut to size, the next stage involved our CNC 30T turret punch and sheet metal perforating to prepare the toolbox components for assembly. Mounting holes for the drawer slides and cabinet walls were accurately punched into the relevant sheets, creating the connection points required for fitting the components together.
The components were then formed using our Amada EG-6013 press brake. This ensured each component achieved the required shape and dimensions for accurate assembly of the custom toolbox.
Frame Assembly and Strength
Once the components had been cut, punched and formed, the next stage was assembly and welding. The steel sheets were joined using spot welding, creating the main toolbox structure and providing strength across the assembled components.
Adjustable feet were then fitted, while the individual drawer boxes were joined and installed within the cabinet. Drawer slides were fitted and tested on each drawer to ensure smooth operation before moving on to the finishing stage.
Surface Finish
For the final stage, the welds were ground back, and the edges deburred to create a smooth, clean finish across the fabricated components.
The completed toolbox was then powder-coated to match the existing workbench, providing a durable surface finish while ensuring the custom unit complemented the surrounding workspace.
Why This Project Stands Out
- Full drawer configuration fabricated and fitted in-house
- Built to the exact footprint of the workbench, with no installation adjustments required
- Drawers fitted and tested for a smooth, quality feel
- Full scope of supply managed in-house, from cutting through to powder coating
